Ultra-low Distortion Accurate Reproduction

CHIP

Two NJU72315 audio volume control chips with extremely low-distortion are embedded in the analog circuit. These chips control the distortion within 0.00016% and provide linear volume control and accurate reproduction of audio sources.

chip

The analog IV and LPF circuits use four high-performance TI OPA1612 operational amplifiers, with 28 high-precision resistors at an accuracy of 0.1% and a low temperature drift of ±25PPM. This provides an accurate and stable RCA output.

Audio Architecture

Tone2 Pro
  • The Khadas USB driver provides ASIO support and removes the latency and sample rate conversion issue experienced with the default Windows USB driver for DACs.

  • MQA(Master Quality Authenticated) is an award-winning audio codec technology. The master MQA file is fully authenticated for high sample rate audio and is small enough to stream and download.

  • A new balanced audio connector standard, designed by Khadas for small form-factor desktop DACs. It is backwards compatible with standard RCA plugs and cables.

  • Purchase the Khadas Balanced-RCA to XLR-3 adapter, it is a male Balanced-RCA plug connected to a male XLR-3 plug.

Update: this is a fantastic DAC. It’s on sale for $140. What a steal at that price. I love the 6 filters. They are all interesting in their own way for different music. This is one of the most musical DACs I’ve owned. It’s like a lower priced entry level Denafrips Ares. Highly recommended! These are just my initial thoughts after 30 minutes of A/B this against my other DACs. Selecting menu options with the wheel is borderline maddening. You do get the hang of it, eventually. This is one of those things you need to arrive at the final setting after some time and never mess with it again. Sound wise, This DAC is very open, spacious and airy. The 4+ filters all sound a little different and none sound “bad”. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite filter right away. Directly comparing my iFi Zen Air DAC, the Tone 2 Pro sounds a bit leaner, but more delicate and “finer”. Sounds weird to say it but it sound a bit more high-end. On the other hand, the iFi is fuller, almost as clear and maybe just as musical. I find the Zen to be less analytical. I can listen and drift off a bit more. Maybe the center image is more consistent. I find myself paying attention a bit more with the Tone. I will keep listening and update….oh, I leveled matched both DACs to 72dB before listening on my desktop near field.

I love the sound of this DAC. I've had a few of them and this one sounds as good as other more expensive (a lot) DACs.I don't like the interface, the colors of a light ring under a knob. But I don't mind, because I won't be changing settings. Once everything is set, and the sound is good to my ears, I only turn the volume down and up in my amplifier with the remote control. The filters options is a nice plus I wasn't expecting. The sound is very clear, and not tiring at all. Excellent instrument separation and with the right amount of spaciousness. All of this at a very low price.

The quality of of sound this DAC produces is astounding. I have been using another DAC, which shall go unnamed, for a year and on a whim thought I'd try this Tone2 Pro out. I use the device with a Sennheiser 650 headphones. Wow! what a difference this makes on those headphones. Brilliant, deep, flowing music, without a trace of diluting or loss. And, in its own way, it is a nice looking device too.A warning however: the single funtion knob is a trial of patience. There is nothing intuitively obvious about it, there are so many modes, functions, operations and attunements that are done with a "Push" and a "Twist," it is overladed and cannot be just intuitively implemented. The "manual" they enclose, and replicate as a PDF download on the website are no help in learning how to use this thing. A button or two might have helped. Hint: push the knob from top to bottom, from the back side to the front -- not down. After being frustrated and confounded by this device, I went back to the reviews here and was helped by being guided to the YouTube video on the Khadas website. While it is annoying to get through, it does give a demonstration that gets one over the hump of using this thing. In the meantime, enjoy the sound of the music this device gives you.

My desktop has seen numerous different DAC/AMPs over the past year or so. I’ve been auditioning various models in hopes of finding the one which best suits my needs to function as a permanent fixture in my office desk head-fi rig. I've spent time a good bit of time with the Loxjie D30 (ES9068AS version), iFi Zen Dac v2, Topping EX5, Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital, AudioQuest DragonFly Red, and even an iFi NEO iDSD - to name a few.All of those devices are strong contenders when it comes to quality of sound, and most of them when it comes to diversity of function. Not a single one of them is a poor choice. A couple of my favorites were the Loxjie D30 (2021 edition), and the iFi NEO iDSD. However, I was never fully satisfied with any of the aforementioned products. Not that I disliked them – they are all great - but there was always a hint of dissatisfaction, however subtle. Until I decided to check out the Khadas Tone2 Pro. I have hardly been able to take my hands off of it since I first opened the box and plugged it in. I'm not going to attempt to describe the sound with audiophile cliches. I’ll just say the sound is on par with, if not better, than any desktop DAC I’ve owned. TINY footprint, HUGE sound. No problem whatsoever driving my Sennheiser HD 650s. In fact it’s a beautifully synergistic combo, IMO.Lastly, to address the volume knob/control situation. It’s not nearly the glaring issue that people are making it out to be. In fact, I think it’s totally fine, and even simple and easy once you learn it. Learning it took all of 15 minutes. Tip: watch the YouTube videos found on Khadas website (titled Tone 2 Pro - Using the Volume Knob, and Tone 2 Pro - Volume Encoder Part 2).All in all, very satisfied with this device and plan to use it for a long time.
