I purchased this adapter after reading another review that gave it high marks. Plus, it was offered at a low price.Upon further research, I find that the chipset in this adapter (Prolific) is more unreliable and fussy about particular drivers than the chipset in other adapters offered by FTDI . I've been told that adapters with the FTDI chipset will often have status indicator led's for transmit and receive, whereas Prolific chipset based adapters mostly do not have this feature. This is a way to tell if the manufacturer is not forthcoming with information.I am keeping this adapter because I have gotten it working, but I will look for another model next time.I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, and the driver that windows auto installed did not work. I ended up consulting the web, where I found the recommendation for the Vista driver from 2007, Version 3.2.0.0 . Thanks to [...] for this driver information and link which got me up and running :[...]Bottom line : works and was inexpensive, but took some time to find the correct driver.I'd rather have paid a few extra dollars to have it work the first time.

Most cheap USB to Serial Port converters support the bare minimum of the standard nine pins supplied. Reducing the functionality allows manufacturers to use cheaper and less components, which keeps the cost down. The Vantec USB to Serial Adapter (CB-USB20SR) supports all pins' functionality! I've tried multiple adapters from multiple manufacturers. This is the cheapest fully functional and reliable adapter on the market.I've used this successfully on Windows 2000, XP & 7. I've used it on both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 ports. Buy with confidence. If you have questions, just post a comment to this review.
