The first 500 series module designed by Rupert Neve, the 517 microphone preamplifier/compressor, brings fantastic sound quality and tone shaping capability to your 500 series rack. True to the lofty standards of Rupert Neve Designs, the 517 boasts transformer-coupled circuitry for untainted sound and an incredibly versatile feature set. The 517's preamp section, which is based closely on the full-sized 5017 design, sports 66dB of gain and an interdependent direct input with 30dB of gain. The mic preamp includes phantom power and phase reverse, and the instrument input includes a ground-lift switch and instrument thru function. One of the things that separates the 517 from other 500 series modules (and preamp in general) is its capability to blend both microphone preamplifier and the direct input together, giving you the option of combining, for example, the sound of a bass cabinet with the direct bass signal as you track. Sounds amazing. Or it did until after three weeks the DI simply stopped working. The only sound coming out of it is the scratchy pot when I turn the instrument gain knob. Truly shocking coming from this brand.

Use this in my project studio and find it works great for bass, as well as guitar and other vocals. Compressor is really sweet too.

I bought mine about 3 years ago and it became flakey and crackly last year after very light, gentle use. This year, it stopped working entirely. Well, it passes some audio, but it's a very crackly, thin signal. This has been in a rack-mounted 500 series chassis in a climate controlled smoke-free studio since I bought it.I am having trouble understanding how a piece of equipment with the Rupert Neve Designs name on it, that was as expensive as this thing was, can die so quickly. I gave it two stars because for the year or so that it actually worked it sounded great. But a year for that price is not really worth it. You might want to save your dough and get something reliable instead.
