For those seeking a single channel preamp to improve the performance of ribbon and dynamic microphones, the RP1 Mic. This preamp brings out all of the nuances of a microphone before running into your recording interface or mixer through long cable runs. With the RP1 the user can tailor the loading on the mic through the variable impedance control. The low cut filter allows the removal of wind noise and plosives before adding additional gain. The discrete preamp circuitry inside is designed for low noise and transparent operation. Balanced output drives long cable runs with ease allowing the preamp to be placed as close as possible to the mic before picking up any noise or interference.

ART doesn't always seem to be held in high regard, and I'm not gear-headed enough to have used most of what they have to offer so I can't speak to that. But I can say this is one of the few non-boutique sub $100 preamps that includes ribbon mics in their use case but actually pushes the high impeadence required to get the right sound out of them(looking at you Samson). As to how clean the boost is, my RP-1 is between a MXL R144 and a M-Audio Air 2x2 and I have to pull the gain way past any normal use settings to make it apparent. The noise floor of the Air is one of the lowest in it's class and the R144 is known for being sensitive and clean. Nothing is compensating for the RP-1, rather the RP-1 compliments the setup. I bought mine used for $40 thinking that if they got the impeadence right at least the engineers knew the score and it couldn't be a total wash. Now I would pay double and think it was money well spent.

The item description promised something the item itself didn’t deliver. It might’ve worked for other purposes, but I only had one.

I'm using this with an ART MX822 preamplifier and an Audio-Technica BPHS1 headset, which has a dynamic mic that delivers very good quality sound at a rather low level. Even with the gain turned up, there just wasn't enough.I installed this with a six inch XLR M-F cable just behind the preamplifier. Don't forget to turn on the phantom power, or you'll get dead silence. The phantom power required is P48. If your preamp only supplies P24 or P12 that will be a problem. This preamplifier works just right. Now, proper audio level is achieved with the gain set mid-way. Perfect.
