On a 4-Hour ride it provides 12 minutes of charging. I bought it thinking I would never have to charge it. But you have to charge it just as frequently as the 1040 without the solar charging capability.

Couldn’t be happier with the upgrade from 520 edge plus to 1040 solar. Climbing feature, easy download and touch screen features make this so easy to use. Completed a 50 mile ride with 81% power left. I’m not that techs and it was a simple set up.

I spent a lot of time diddling with my older Edge 1000, replacing the battery, which was a royal pain, only to have the new battery last about the same duration as the original 8yr old factory battery (~2hrs), so I broke down and bought the Edge 1040 a few weeks ago. I charged it, and 3 weeks later, I'm still on the original charge. I ride about 7-8 hours a week, so that's ~20+ hours on the new Edge 1040, and it still is showing 50% battery life! Also, syncing it to my monitors (HR, Power meter, and Di2) was effortless, and pairing it with my phone and the Garmin Connect app was easy. Connecting to the Garmin App transferred all my saved data to the new device, which was super cool. I was hesitant to buy this only because I didn't want to spend hours dealing with connecting the dots (so to speak), but wow, they've come a long way in making that easy. It reminded me of buying a new iPhone, turn it on, connect to Garmin Connect, and it does the rest. Super easy for a non-IT person.
