This is a very natural mix of lava gravel - the perfect choice for creating a rugged looking setting. Mostly rust and reds with just a few black pieces blended in. Lava gravel stays put even under a strong flow of water. There is a slight color difference when wet and dry, making it a little easier to know when to water. Red lava gravel gives your Bonsai tree a great look, while preserving water- and air-flow to the roots! This is a great look for rugged Bonsai trees, and can create a stunning contrast between the vibrant green of the tree itself. Gravel, by itself, has little ability to hold nutrients, so this black lava gravel should be used on top of your tree's topsoil. However, just like rocks in real life, the gravel protects the topsoil from erosion and weather. The porous nature of gravel means that, unlike other stones, air and water can still easily make it down to the roots. Gravel is also great for humidity trays, since it changes color slightly when wet. Just a glance at your black lava gravel will tell you whether it's time for watering or to refill the humidity tray. Gravel Gives Bonsai a Distinctive Look - Tinyroots black lava gravel top dressing creates attractive and colorful Bonsai displays that convey power when you're showing off your tree! This package contains three cups, which is enough to cover about one square foot of ground. Three cups is roughly one lb. of gravel.

Use this as a top dressing for lithops and other succulents and it works great for that purpose. Love that i don’t need to worry about picking it all off the top when repotting since a little mixed in with my soil is beneficial for drainage and airflow.I do wish the particle sizes and color (ranges from dark black, to light black, with bits of red/brown)were a bit more uniform, and there’s quite a lot of dust, however this is to be expected and a very minor annoyance and one I’ll happily accept for a natural top dressing- definitely beats polished rocks any day!

These are even smaller than I expected, and I knew they were going to be pretty small. I used them as a top decoration, as well as to weigh down the soil for some bonzai jades that I'm working on, and it looks great. I do wish they were bigger though.

I think this saved a few of my plants. Small bag and I believe it's aluminum and plastic; I'd transfer it to glass since it's probably absorbent which the plants then absorb and may emit, according to some articles. In any case aesthetically, it's aesthetically beautiful especially with contrasting colored plants like pink or white. It helped with keeping plants warm but not making the soil heavy. What I'm unclear about is of it should go on top or bottom of terrariums. Opinions are contrary. On top of regular plants they looked gorgeous and seemed to make most plants happy. I think the Pothos may not have reacted to it but that could be due to other factors.

Bought this to use underneath a plant I purchased on a trip to Maui. It's a large lava rock with a hole having a small tree growing out of it. They recommended using lava rocks underneath to provide humidity and fits in with the theme. I only needed to use part of the bag and will save the rest for another project.

This works great. I have several bonsai where the sellers had not put any cover over the soil and the soil would pack down and the water roll off. I used a fork to gently loosen the soil and then placed the lava rock over the soil, just as I have on plants purchased from BonsaiBoy. Packed it down gently and watered. No more water running off😄. I did 4 medium to small plants and haven't even used 1/4 of the bag. Bag is resealable. Great product.

It's always hard to tell how large the rocks are going to be, but I was happy to see the size of the lava rocks was very small, which adds a nice look as a bonsai soil topper. Great color and good quality. A little costly for what it is, but I'm satisfied.

I bought this mainly to use as the bonsai gravel in my 12" x 9" humidity tray. This bag contains enough to fill my humidity tray and I still have about 1/2 bag left. I plan to use some more as a top dressing.+ Holds Moisture+ Looks Great+ Different Size Pieces+ Price/Value+ Resealable Bag- No Cons_Bottom Line_ Yes, I would recommend this to a friend for a humidity tray, top dressing, or both. It looks good, comes with a decent size bag, and holds moisture well.
