About this item

  • FIRE STARTERS SO POWERFUL, YOU WON'T BELIEVE THEY DON'T HAVE ANY PETROCHEMICALS: Our starters are not just plant-based. They’re also redefining what a fire starter can do. No other single fire starter will light logs AS BIG OR AS FAST IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS! One Survivor fire starter can light fires with dry logs up to 4 in. thick (5 in. if kiln dried), no kindling or small logs needed! If lighting wet/frozen logs, it does what most starters can't do which is light wet logs up to two inches thick with no kindling!
  • THE CONVENIENCE OF A GAS FIRE PIT: LIGHT A MULTI-HOUR FIRE WITH ZERO EFFORT WITH LARGE LOGS- Set up your fire in 10-15 seconds, and let our starter do the rest of the work. We include a super easy-to-follow graphic with two simple steps for setting up the perfect fire. We GUARANTEE a fire with this set up if you use dry logs up to four inches thick. No more fanning flames or babysitting dying fires—just sit back, grab a drink, and you’ll have a blazing fire in no time!
  • NEVER SPLIT WOOD AGAIN: START FIRES WITH LOGS AS THICK AS FOUR INCHES - With a 20+ minute burn time, our starters are designed to burn so hot that they can light dry logs four inches thick with no smaller logs or kindling needed. So go ahead and leave the ax or wood splitter at home on your next camping trip because with our starters, you will probably never need it!
  • PLANT-BASED STARTERS THAT ARE MADE FOR COOKING- No petrochemicals means better food! Our starters are made from coconuts, soy and eco-friendly, unbleached, uncoated brown kraft paper that gets its color directly from the wood pulp. We also never use paraffin wax as it is an oil byproduct. Unlike many of our competitors, you won’t see us labeling our product “food grade”, “natural” or “food safe” while still using petrochemicals. We want you to know what we use so that you can know exactly what’s in your fire.
  • OUR METAL STAPLES DISINTEGRATE INTO SOIL OVER TIME- Only metal staples can keep our starters rolled while they burn which is what enables their long burn times. Unfortunately, plant-based fasteners either release chemicals when they burn or they burn up too soon. Please do not remove the staples and don’t worry, our staples won’t last forever. Our non-galvanized, non-stainless steel staples begin rusting after the starter burns and will naturally disintegrate into soil over the next 2-5 years.
  • FORMERLY VOLCANO FIRE STARTERS- Due to trademark restrictions, we have changed the brand from Volcano Fire Starters to Quick & Easy Cookout Premium Log & Charcoal Fire Starters. It's the same great product as Volcano Fire Starters, just a new name. This will be a gradual transition so packaging may vary.

First thing, if I wasn't being provided these for review, I am not sure I would have every dropped nearly fifty bucks for ten starters, that pricing seems wild. Yes, they are eco friendly and the company is supposedly doing even more for the environment with part of that purchase price. Yes, they claim to complete remove the need for all other kindling (with a big caveat here). But that's still wild compared to other firestarters.Do they work though? Kind of. Which isn't a great start for that expensive of a product. They do burn a long time when used as directed. They burn hot enough to start a fire. But let's circle back to that caveat. These claim to be all you need to get full sized logs going, without kindling or any other pieces or accelerants or aids, IF IT IS SEASONED/KILN DRIED WOOD. That's great for your fire pit or fireplace at home (maybe), but definitely not a surefire (ha) solution if you are camping. My experience was that with seasoned wood, yes, I could get it going without using smaller logs, though one test took most of the long burn time to get going. But with less prepared logs, nope. Breaking the rules and unwiding it with a little bit of kindling worked, but even that was with some tending. You are paying a lot for oil-impregnated, slow-burning paper. If you are using dried and seasoned wood and have half an idea of how to place it, yes, it's a set it and forget it firestarter that probably will work nearly every time. But with anything trickier, you are still going to be putting in some work. It's hard to endorse something this pricey that makes the easiest fire to start even easier to start, regardless of how consistent it is. It's like paying a ton for an e-bike to ride it down gently sloping hills, instead of just using a regular bike. Especially if that e-bike doesn't go uphill without nearly as much work as your ten speed. I can't give it five stars, but it does, technically, do everything it claims well enough to merit four.

The good news is that the starter has eco friendly features. It seems like this would be much better to use with coals than wood, but I don't use coals, so my test was in my fire place. Let's start with the packaging... They come 4 starters to a zip pouch. The zip pouch is not notched for easy opening, you have the cut across the top. The starters are really tight up against each other, and the pouch is so tightly filled, that you really have to struggle to get the first and third ones out of the package. This is especially annoying and difficult because the started is slippery (waxy) and oily. The zipper also doesn't reseal easily. The instructions say to use a log the same width as the starter. That's not really clear - width of the circumference? width of the height? I tried first with a modest sized log. Let's talk about starting the starter. You have to shape the flattened coil into a circle. It doesn't stay open very well, yet you're supposed to light a few spots of the inside coil. That means your match is at a downward angle, so the flame moves up the match quickly, but it takes longer for the match to catch the coil on fire, so you better use a LONG match. It took a full five minutes to get to picture 4, and the flame hadn't even touched the log yet. I think the round design is a problem, since it takes to long to get to the outer coil to reach the log. Probably a square shape would work better. I started over with a new coil, but using kindling - which is counter to once of the supposed features - the ability to start your fire without kindling. This worked better, but it still took a good five minutes to get to pic 5, and another 5 or more to get to the point where I could add a fuel log. It did burn hot, and when it finally catches on the log, it burns well. Overall, it was more difficult to start a fire with these than using tinder/kindling/fuel method, or a flame log, and it took longer... No set it and forget it in my experience. Value... while I can appreciate that it must cost more to make, each started works out to cost more than the log size starters that are less eco friendly. If I weren't evaluating this, I probably would not have tried it once I saw the price.

I’ve tried three other firestarters from Amazon, and this one blows them all out of the water.I use this to start the charcoal in my big green egg, which is a very touchy job. Normally, I have to babysit the flames for 15 minutes to make sure it’s really going to light and that the fire starters don’t go out. But last night I had company over and couldn’t spend that time, so I got out the volcano, lit it in 30 seconds, tossed in the charcoal, and 15 minutes later without looking we were burning at 700. Such a relief.

This product is amazing. I’ve been making campfires since I was very young, so I was more than impressed when this thing had my coals burning in about 10 minutes. That’s not an exaggeration. It’s also very simple to use. Just pop it out of the package and light it in a few places under your wood or coal. The hardest part of starting a fire is getting the base coals lit, and this does it better than any method I’ve seen. It’s also nice to know it’s made with environmentally friendly ingredients. No more endlessly applying lighter fluid to get a good fire going. I highly recommend.

This fire starter is high quality, and I love how the fire starter is chemical-free and still highly effective and starts the fire quickly. For the more environmentally conscious, this fire starter makes a lot of sense and saves you a lot of time.

Got my starters today and used one to light a huge pile of lump charcoal. Within minutes all was ablaze! It was easy to ignite and burned so cleanly. The meat tasted great. No residue anywhere.
