I haven’t used this yet but it’s a great quality product. Sturdy and I am sure very effective. I can’t wait for my bulbs to arrive now.

I had lots of bulbs to plant so I bought this to help me out. I have to admit I did struggle with it a times. Our soil isn't great so it was hard work digging the tool into the ground and when soil was pulled out it got stuck in the tool and was tricky to get out. I also had a few times where the handle bent when digging it into the ground.I do wish I would have invested in the long handle tool rather than this one but its still better than using a trowel. For lucky people with good soil I imagine this tool would work like a charm.

This product is not very well designed and it broke the second time I used it.Unless you have very soft soil, it is hard to push/twist into the ground. It gets blocked with soil after each use and the 'core' of soil is hard to remove. The metal arms are higher than the wooden handle and dig painfully into the palms of your hand when you use it.It broke the second time I used it - the screw snapped and came out of the handle on one side meaning it is now unusable.I have emailed Spear and Jackson customer services to ask for a refund but have so far had no response. This has NOT been a great experience. Do not recommend buying.

This is really sturdy. I’m sure it’s ok in other soil conditions, but my clay soil just got stuck in this. A trowel would probably just be easier:

Works well in hard/clay soil. Well worth it for the price.

This bulb planter is worth every penny. It made light work of a big batch of tulip, crocus, iris and fritillary bulbs which I was dreading planting with the trowel. The depth markings on the side are particularly useful in getting the hole the right depth. I thought that it might have been difficult to get the plug of earth out but I needn't have worried. All that's required is to turn the planter upside down and to push it out. It's very sturdy and I expect never to have to buy another one.

Love the extra depth this provided for planting those bulbs like tulips and daffodils.

Designed for digging in a soil that has good tilth... not rooty, stony, compact clay... for that you need a pickaxe.I used this for transplanting and arranging pots in multiple raised beds. The original clay soil has been amended with 50% compost and is quite friable. This planter cuts through it like butter. It also holds the soil in the implement until you tap it out. Cuts precise shape, deep hole ready for a 3-4" pot or bulb. Should last a lifetime if properly used and stored. Highly recommend
