Quality:I used my calipers to measure these and each one was near spot on for 5mm diameter (the size I ordered). Each one was 100mm in length, but I noticed that many of the cut ends were slightly angled, so if you need two flat ends, this may not be the product for you.Otherwise, these have been in a project sitting outdoors and has survived several rains and outdoor weather cycles without rusting. Therefore, this does appear to be actual stainless steel, which is great news.As along as you are okay with the ends of the rods being slightly angled from being cut, these will work well for you .

The rods arrived nicely packaged with several layers of protection consisting of a mailing pouch, a stuff cardboard tube with taped ends and a couple wraps of clear plastic keeping the rods from knocking around inside. All of which did an excellent job of keeping them safe during shipping as they arrived in perfect condition. The quality of the cuts on the ends of the rods isn’t particularly impressive as they’re all skewed in various angles and haven’t been cleaned up after the cut was done, leaving some burrs. So if you’re specifically wanting to use them at full length you may need to do some clean-up on the ends, especially if you want to fit a bearing onto them.Otherwise, the rods are good quality with a nice surface finish and all five of the provided rods are very straight. With a quick check with some digital callipers I also verified that the rods are all exactly 4mm in diameter, and they’re all between 400.5mm to 401mm in length, so they’re as described in size.I don’t have an absolutely foolproof method of testing if they are made from 304 stainless steel, but all signs are pointing that being the case as it’s had no issues with a long soak in salty water and vinegar without any degradation or cosmetic changes. They’re also slightly magnetic, but that’s very common and expected for austenitic steels, which will form some martensite when cold-worked. That presence of martensite gives it a slight pull in the presence of a permanent magnet, but nothing that feels abnormal compared to other 304 and 316 stainless steel rods I've bought from various brands. As always with the M METERXITY product listings of various types and materials they’re relatively well priced for pre-cut lengths compared to some brands. This is one of the listings where they’re in the middle of the market for pricing, as it’s not hard to find other vendors selling 4mm diameter 304 rods for a slightly better price point. But other than some minor roughness on the ends of the rods and being slightly more expensive than other generic brands selling the same rods I can’t fault them, they’re well made and suitable for a wide range of applications.

I think everyone with a metal lathe knows that 8 mm is a little bit larger than 5/16 inch but if you didn't, now you do. These are 5 handy pieces of stainless steel stock, roughly 5/16 inch by 1 foot long. One other note, if you do machine these, you need to dip the resulting parts in nitric acid to restore their "stainless" characteristic. If you don't, little specs of rust can appear on the surface if exposed to the elements.
