taped them up with PTFE tape and fit them into some electric solenoid controlled pneumatic valves. I used the screw to adjust the leak rate to be quite slow, it took a few tries since tightening the locknut moves the needle screw... but it works just fine. They didn't get smashed or disfigured as I handled them, and I was definitely putting some pressure on the foamed metal portion as I was hand tightening it into my pneumatic valve.
