I ordered several bags of this "lawn soil" last year to fill in low spots in the lawn that I grew from seed. I am becoming an intermediate in lawn care and I now understand that I have to dethatch my lawn every so often and provide aeration amongst other things. I used this soil to fill in some low spots mixed with some masonry sand as recommended by landscape professionals in a 50/50 mix. After becoming more experienced, I realized most of these bag soils including this brand has way too much wood chips bark and other hard organic matter. It will take an incredibly long time to breakdown. I was hoping for black dirt in the classic sense. Just black dirt. No splinters, no micro bark, no chunks of wood or pebble. After reading some R*ddit forums I understand that begged soil is all basically the same and it is one giant rip off. The bark and wood chips accumulated in the remaining low spots of my lawn after some erosion. It had the same effect as using bark or chips to keep weeds down; it kept my lawn from growing in certain spots and my lawn this season had become patchy as a result. I am having to do a lot of work to excavate all of the chips and bark. I've even resorted to breaking out the shop back and vacuuming the chips up out of my lawn . This looks ridiculous in practice and my neighbors have understandably let me know how crazy it appears. I understand that one day the bark and the chips will breakdown but after 12 months there is no deterioration that would be really noticeable. If you go on the Internet and poke around most big box hardware stores just rebrand the same soil and charge way more for specialty dirt. In this case lawn dirt. You will still have to shift it. So basically you've paid more and you have some manual labor ahead of you to make it workable. Some videos on Yout*be show major brand dirt with different specialties and wildly varying prices and upcharges for specialty dirt but it is all basically the same trash with wood chips and other bits like pebbles. I will have to go to my local plant shop or Nursery to find screened topsoil. That is what we all want and it took me a long time to figure out what it is called and where to get it. If you buy it by volume it is way cheaper than these bags and the quality is way higher and it is ready to use. I've done some sampling and the dirt from the local nursery that is screened has way more nitrogen and other valuable nutrients for my lawn or plantings. I can later add in bark or other additives for drainage if I want and it will still be cheaper and I have more control. Always take a look at the soil or dig into it if possible even at a local place or big box. Show me the dirt!

I somehow got grass to start growing in an area where I had a tree removed when I didn’t plant til mid/late October in the northeastern US. If it worked then, I’m sure this will work if you actually plant when you’re supposed to!

Due to winter setting in here in AZ, I shifted to rye grass seed and used this product for any bare spots. My grass is beautiful, and I don't think I could say that if it wasn't for this.

This stuff is fabulous! I have used it in areas where the soil has gotten so sapped of nutrients it has turned to clay. When I put this stuff out with a little seed and grass starts to grow within a week. I will buy this stuff until my lawn is full and fabulous, this is the best thing since the seeds I've spread. Having just a tad too much mulch makes it a bit harder to spread....and my dogs like to eat the mulch bits. Although it hasn't been great for my tree stump. Have to find something else for that unfortunately.
