You don't seem to hear much about this book, or its cousin Progressive Independence: Rock. And that is really unfortunate because I think these are excellent for several reasons:1. They really are truly progressive in the sense that they don't rush you from simple to complex patterns. Instead, they are very gradual as each new pattern adds only a small amount from the last. This ensures that you are truly ready for each new step as you build towards more complex playing. Many players who find themselves struggling with quick-moving books such as The Art Of Bop Drumming have found success using this book as a primer. And I feel that in many ways, this book exceeds that one as far as basic independence exercises go. It is far more comprehensive with a much wider range of patterns, especially when it comes to breaking up triplets between the hand and foot.2. The exercises are thorough and comprehensive. You really get what you're paying for when you buy a Spagnardi book. There are tons of exercises in these volumes - enough to last you a lifetime of real use no matter how advanced you get.3. The exercises are adaptable. As you progress, all you need is a little imagination to take one of the exercises in many different musical directions. For example, you can orchestrate the strokes around the kit - play different surfaces with each limb to create new sounds and develop fluidity. So while classics like Stick Control, Syncopation, and The Art Of Bop Drumming have their places in the lexicon of great drumming books, more people should be aware of these as essential tools for developing your skills.

It just landed today!Had a quick look through it and I spent an hour going through some of the exercises and felt them working straight away because of how 'awkard' they felt until after a few times round and the 'muscle memory' starts to show up and then they feel more natural. It's 4 way coordination with 'swing' and will be of value for a long long time.A hidden gem that all drummers can learn from...Mp3s are included too.

I had been struggling with John Riley's Art of Bop Drumming and was referred this book. It has good exercises that help build independence starting at a more basic level. It has helped tremendously. I recommend using this book to anyone interested in starting to play jazz drums.
