The globe is actual glass and the unit functions flawlessly. It makes no audible noise that I could detect. The base is plastic but feels sturdy. The accompanying instructions are comprehensive and coherent, which is more than I'm used to. I also really appreciate that it can be run from USB or 4 AAA batteries. Wasn't expecting much out of this but ended up pleasantly surprised, especially for the price.

Ball is not big, but makes nice nighttime visual interest piece. Has not dimmed or slowed down. Impressive for what it is.

I purchased this for my son for his room. I picked this one because it appeared in the description to be 4" rather than 3" in diameter. There were less expensive options marketed at 3" with the same characteristics otherwise... for less expensive. When it arrived, I quickly noticed that it was the exact same size as the one we had seen in a store marketed as 3"... so save yourself some money and keep your selection open to those units. As for the unit itself, it's well made enough and functions rather well. My son loves it and keeps it on as a nightlight. I haven't tried it with batteries, so I can't yet comment on that. Also, the USB cord (that seems rather proprietary on the unit end) is very short... so you need to have it plugged in close to where it will be used unless you want to use a USB extension. Finally, it does not come with the USB to 110 outlet adapter... but, we have a few laying around.

Too much fun. Sure it is only a few inches in diameter... and the base is plastic. BUT WOW. IT WORKS and works WELL. This is a new special treat to bring out for the kids. Remember: not a toy. The only weird thing was that it seems to "reset" an old USB charger we have. When plugged into the newer multiple outlet usb station we have it is 100% awesome. For the price.... this is perfect!

I've had this item a while but only gave it to my daughter about 2 weeks ago. It has survived well so far and looks exactly like the one in the image. I only say that because I've read reviews where people state the received something that looked different. The item works well and is easy to see, even in broad daylight, and looks amazing in the dark. My daughter likes to use it as a night light.Technical glitch warning - OK, this works great, but we've noticed that when we have our touch screen tablets in my daughters room the touch screen and device just didn't want to work, but when you leave the room the tablets work normally. The problem is this uses a very high voltage with an extremely low current (very safe levels), but the touch screen doesn't want to work when it is close to the plasma ball. Not a negative mark, just something to be aware of.I uploaded 3 photos from the first or second night we had this, and it still operates with the same intensity. As you can see there are plenty of strands of electricity constantly streaming and jumping around the inside of the globe, and as any other plasma ball you've seen the strands converge when you get near it with your hand or turn into a single stream if you touch a large enough surface area. I had taken a video but it didn't upload to Dropbox for some reason, but this does work well. More than I expected for the price of the item. Our daughter if 5 YO, and I know at some point she is going to knock it over, so I'm buying a second one now...I'll, ummm, yeah, I'll keep it in my office, just in case, plugged in to make sure it works. :-p

My son really likes this plasma. It's much better that the larger one that recently broke, causing us to buy this one. There seems to be more of the little lightning bolts in the globe, just makes it more fun to look at. FYI, the globe is about the size of a softball.

Works when powered by my smartphone charger but as soon as I tried using the usb port on my laptop it killed all the ports on the laptop including the mouse. I think it draws too much current for the computer and tripped some kind of overload protection. I had to restart the laptop to get power back to the usb ports. DO NOT USE THE USB ON YOUR COMPUTER TO POWER THIS LIGHT.

I didn't really read the description when I ordered this, just kind of bought it on impulse because I thought my seven year old would think it was cool- and he does. I didn't realize it was USB operated (like I said I didn't read the description, or even the full name of the item apparently). This ended up not really being an issue as we have several USB wall adaptors so can plug it in pretty much anywhere but of course the cord that comes with it is short because it's meant to plug into a computer and sit on a desk. It's smaller than the big ones that were all the rage a couple decades ago but functions the same way and my son likes it.
