Don't be deceived by this product - it's SMALL - very small. Is only supposed to suit 8 inch rounds. Also - it takes a LOT longer to heat up AND cook the shells. If you want a decent sized bowl you're better off using your oven. I'm so disappointed with this purchase - wasn't at ALL what I expected.Intentional unclear description - and reviews written by sellers. Not impressed!Give this one a miss!!

I love this thing so why didn't I rate it higher? It only cooks one at a time. I thought maybe it wouldn't take so long to cook the tortillas but it does take a while. Almost have to place and forget. Also, use nonstick cooking spray or else it won't get them very crunchy. You pretty much have to still take them out and let them set for a bit for them to harden. It's not bad, I do like using it... I just wish there were at least 2 spots to cook tortillas in since it takes so long.

Not only does this product not work as advertised, but it's also dangerous. It takes forever to toast one tortilla, and the device gets too hot to handle. Save yourself the trouble of returning it by just not ordering.

While this is a clever idea, it makes far too small a bowl for a real taco salad. Even my mother, for whom I bought this, had to make two bowls to get enough to eat. Given she's a light eater, that's saying something. You really can't fit more than a tiny amount of filling in the shells, so I'd have to say this was a poor product. Also, took longer to crisp the tortillas than using the oven. We'll go back to our old methods, and figure out what to do with this unit...but it won't be for baking tortilla shells anymore.

Of course if you're looking for crispy your not going to get it with this product. It amazes me at the number of people who write negative reviews saying it doesn't make the tortilla crispy...well of course not. It's baking them.I just don't l like them greasy so this suits me just fine.brush with a little oil on both sides them bake. I send it through the cycle twice and I'm happy as a clam.Honestly deep frying does get them super crispy but as we all know if you don't get to it right away or it sits for any length of time that shell gets greasy and sad and by the time you hit the bottom....well no one wants to eat that. This holds up quite a bit better than that. Just experiment with it a bit. I don't like any oil on mine, but my son likes the added flavor so I very lightly brush his tortilla with a little olive oil on both sides. Mine I just 'bake' twice. bake once, let it cool and them pop it back in again. you might not like that way, but if you're tired of the deep fried mess well then go with that. If you gotta have crunch crunch crunch Ortega makes the premade ones. I say have at those. great thing about this world. lots of choices out there.

Our local grocery store stocks 'ready made' Taco Salad tortilla bowls @ $8.99 per package of four and sometimes on sale for $4.99 for four. This unit nearly paid for itself in one usage when I had guests over and we served eight. I read all the reviews before buying this unit and decided to take the risk. It takes 5 minutes for my unit to provide a crisp bowl using flour tortillas. I also found that heating the tortillas in the micro for 15-20 seconds makes them pliable for an easy fit while centering the tortilla in the unit. My personal preference is to apply a thin coat of cooking oil via a kitchen brush and then a 'light' sprinkle of salt on the oiled side which provides for a nice crisp salad bowl that mimics a tortilla chip when consumed with the salad. My bowls have exactly the same look and color as the one pictured in the unit.

I have both the shells that you place in the oven and then I decided to buy this electric shell appliance.Does it work? yes it does and it bakes and forms shells to perfection. However, as one other poster commented. The unit works much better when turned upside down forming the dough around the shell portion of the appliance as opposed to trying to place the dough into the well and closing the unit to bake.By placing the dough and forming upside down on the units actual shell form, it prevents the dough from splitting or causing a hole in the actual baked bowl. So ya gotta just turn the unit upside down & you'll have perfectly shaped and cooked tortilla bowls every time.Does it really work? Yes it does. when you use it upside down.

This helpful kitchen aid is terrific for making home made taco shells for taco salads, as a container for fried ice cream and other desserts. Also these shells are perfect for holding items on a buffet table. The non-stick is definitely non-sticking. medium size shells seem to work better. the small shells work good too if you like little tacos. the large shells are to big and will rip when the lid is closed. plan on buying another one to keep at the cabin.
