Metra 107-CH5 DDIN radio Provision for Jeep Grand Cherokee 1996-1998

This product advertises itself as a double DIN installation provision, though truth be told, the dash opening on the 1996-98 Grand Cherokee is only 1.5 DIN. What this means as the vast majority of double DIN head units on the market will not fit into the dash. Yes, there is a small amount of space between the dash opening and the dash trim where a 7 inch screen will fit, with modification to the vents directly below and that's what this kit accomplishes. The real issue is the sheer lack of upside down L shaped head units on the market. While that's not Metra's fault, it should be more clearly noted. The L shaped JVC head unit I initially purchased was L shaped, but with the body at the bottom instead of the top. In order for this to work without modification, you must use one of the rare and expensive upside down L shaped head units. I ended up finding a shallow double DIN head unit from Atoto and was able to make it work with some modification to the dash and the vent extension in this kit, as well as trimming down the side brackets supplied with the head unit from 2-DIN to 1.5-DIN.Another thing I would have liked to have seen done better is to have more clear instructions, specifically on where to cut your dash trim. I ended up making the hole in the dash trim a little too large, which required me to glue the provision into place. I may end up finding another dash piece from the junkyard to cut correctly now that I better understand the directions. Also, I understand some engineering and thinking went into this kit, but isn't $50 a little excessive for a few pieces of ABS plastic and a fastener?

Looks great but would help if they mentioned it only fits one touchscreen head unit and that unit is $600 …. But with some fab work on the inside of the dash you can make one work
