The Manfrotto 153 is one of many adapters I keep in my studio to help make diverse pieces of gear work together. Sometimes I need more clearance for a light head and the 153 is ideal for adding a little length to a light stand, Super Clamp stud, extension arm or boom. Simply slip the 5/8" socket over the stand stand tip and tighten the t-screw and you're in business. It also fits perfectly on mic stands and booms if you need to press one into light stand service. While not as strong as milled pieces--it's cast aluminum--the 153 is well made and strong enough to gold up a typical 5- or 7-bulb CFL head on a boom or Super Clamp. Finally, realize the tip is designed to mount standard light stands (Mole Richardson style) and doesn't work with a cold shoe unless you add another adapter on top of it, e.g., Manfrotto Umbrella Mount 026. If you mainly plan to use a cold shoe, you should get a instead. All in all a handy and well made adapter. I probably should buy another one...

Not too much to say. It's solid. I use it to provide a few inches of extra length on the bottom of a Phottix Multi Boom used in a Westcott medium Apollo Softbox. Just one of many uses I'm sure.
