Excellent performance: robustness, lightness and versatility... these are the features of the new double articulated arm range. The 396 family has been developed to provide greater robustness than the 196 range and to support heavier loads (upto 5kg), though keeping versatility thanks to its extendable sliding arm system (extends upto 860mm), further enhanced by its quick lock system. The arm is great, I have the two section and three section versions. However, I don't know why they always show a picture with an all black arm. The end studs / spigots are not black like the picture shows, they are always silver. Not sure if they even make one with black spigots.

Solid and great quality Manfrotto product, don't get me wrong, that part is a full 5 stars! But it's got large teeth in the elbow mechanism, so when you start to tighten it down, it moves to the closest notch. If you don't care about this, then it's a great product. I was going to give it three stars, but the build quality is so good and the angles it does lock in won't budge after tightening it. I do macro photography in my office, so the difference between two notches makes a huge difference and end up compensating some other way.

I needed a way to mount my iPad to my tripod to use it as a teleprompter. This was a great sturdy product. When used with Manfrotto clamps it is sturdy enough to hold my DSLR too.My only CON which is why I gave it 4 stars is that the posts to mount too are not easily removable...that way it could have been really versatile.Terrific.
