I bought this for a 3rd grade grandson who is just learning to play. My decision was based on the reviews and the price. This recorder has a nice tone and feel, and my grandson is learning to play on it; but, the instrument has two fatal flaws. The head piece does NOT separate from the rest of the body for cleaning. It has a one piece molded construction. I have a swab but it will only go up to the head joint and no further and you really have to twist to get it into the recorder. It came with a cleaning stick, BUT, the end hole is so small it will allow just the stick into it--no cleaning cloth. What good is that? I wouldn't dare try using a tissue because if it tore off, there would be no way to get it out since the recorder does NOT come apart. Because there is no practical, convenient (or any?) way to clean the head joint, it is unsanitary and squeaks due to buildup. This makes it a deal breaker. The head joint should always separate from the body for cleaning. The second fatal flaw is that it cannot be tuned since it is a one piece construction. This means that if you play with others, they must tune to YOUR instrument since it is impossible to tune it. On my particular instrument, the high C is sticks out like a sore thumb when playing with other instruments. The low C, D, E are o.k. but as you go up the scale, it gradually becomes out of tune until you hit C where it is very noticeable. When my grandson plays by himself, it is passable until he hits the C. It still carries the melody, but there is an "off" sound. This is more a noise toy for tots.

This recorder is very good for children that are beginning to learn, especially if you are paying less than four dollars each. I bought one for myself to try, and shortly afterword another seven for the girls I taught in camp. Pros: It is on key for baroque soprano recorder. It has a nice but strong sound. It comes with a case, a cleaning rod, and a fingering chart. It looks nice. (I couldn't tell by the picture what color it would be. It is black and has the company name, Tudor ,in gold, which comes off after a short while. I prefer a recorder to be black or ivory, rather than colorful, so the children don't think it looks like a toy. Afterword I might encourage the colorful ones to brighten up a performance or to rejuvenated the excitement of learning. ) Cons: As you might have noticed, this is a one piece recorder. I knew that would make it harder to clean. It is also very thin with a thick cleaning rod. It is very hard to put the cleaning rod with a cloth into this recorder. The pinkey hole is very slightly to the right, in my opinion it is to close to the other holes. That makes it very hard to do the low c (do) and the low f (fa). The way I teach with this is by first doing left hand notes. Afterword the low d, e and sharp f (re, mi, and and sharp fa). Then I would go to high e, and technically all of the very high notes can be done with this. I would still encourage getting a better one when the child reaches that point, so the low c and low f can be used much more comfortably. Most children will probably not need those two notes for a while, so this should be good. Adults and teens learn more quickly, so this is probably not ideal for them. If the price goes up, as I noticed, it has been yoyo-ing up and down, I would advise getting a better one which will probably not be more significantly expensive.

My son needed this for his 4th grade music class and it's a great price! Not sure if our ears can handle all the "Hot Cross Buns" but it works great!

It was so cheap and it works. What more do you want? The "cover" is a little plastic envelope thing, but for this price, it's nice that they give you anything. I love it! It's so fun and easy.
