Gerber used to be the gold standard for blades back in the day. Over the past decade or so they appear to have lost a step or three. Took a chance on this one and I am pleased to report it seems to have regained some of the Gerber quality and precision. Great EDC.

This knife is so much bigger than the tanto blade that Gerber is claiming to be an EVO. I truly believe that Gerber should be required to call that one a mini. Anyway, this thing is almost identical to my last one, other than the serrated edge that I didn't really want. Unfortunately, that one is no longer made. This will be my everyday carry for a myriad of things, to include self defense. I feel confident that this knife will handle anything that my daily needs require of a knife. Yes the paint wears and that's fine with me. I need a tool, not a display piece.

I've been using one as my EDC for about 10 years and I've put it through quite a bit of punishment. Considering the cost being less than $40 for a tool that held up for so long under so much use and abuse, and still is actually functional, I absolutely believe it deserves 5 stars. I've included pictures of the old beside the new to give you an idea.I especially love the basic design features and shape (which it shares almost all of with the crkt M16 family). The slim handle, slender well balanced design, and flipper tab are all features that I love and look for in just about any knife I buy. That being said, I'll tell you the few things I found that can be complained about:-First and the reason I decided to replace it. The screws that held on the pocket clip stripped their threads out recently and would no longer hold the pocket clip onto the knife. And the screws in the end of the handle began to show signs of doing the same, as shown in the 3rd picture where you can see the handle has started to separate. Attempting to tighten the screws just spins them in place. I believe I may have caused this problem for both the pocket clip and handle by over tightening the screws. But this is also a recent development beginning in the last year.-Second, and you'll notice it early on. The blade steel is somewhat soft and needs to be sharpened often. Especially if used regularly or on materials that quickly dull blades, like cardboard or landscaping cloth. Also the teeth of the serrations will wear down, as can be seen in the second picture.I don't consider either of those to be enough of detterent to not purchase this knife. Don't want to have to worry about those problems, you'll probably want to spend a fair bit more money. It's absolutely served me well.

I go camping and I wanted a small utility that would be useful out there but also small enough to keep in my pocket when I want to have it with me back in the city (so that ruled out a 7" fixed blade).I was recommended Gerber by a friend who is very into knives and I saw this one and decided to go with it.I got it and it's a fantastic knife. Folds up pretty small and the clip is really handy. The knife itself is great - it came sharpened, and it was SHARP!!! I could lay the edge on a tomato and the knife would fall into the tomato under it's own weight (this is the fine edge portion too - not the serrated portion!).The knife is comfortable to hold and the design looks great. You can open it a few ways. When closed, a little nub sticks out the back side of the knife and if you "flip" the knife while putting pressure on this nub with your index finger (you would be putting pressure toward the bottom of the hilt), you can flip the knife open. Another way is with your thumb pressing the peg on the side of the knife (pegs are on both sides so you can do it with your right or left hand). The other was is just pulling it open with your other hand.To close it you need to push over a piece of metal that is bent. It is bent so it sits behind the blade locking it open. You must push it so that the metal is flat against the inside of the handle, allowing the blade to rotate closed. All in all it's a great little knife and I liked it so much I bought a second Gerber knife!

Pros:- Fast flip out design- Pocket clip- Solid feel and design- Black anodized- Slim and serrated design- Light- Flip stub acts as a hiltCons:- Paint chips easily- Thumb stub is small and useless- Clip is too tight- Not enough gripThoughts:It definitely need to get loosed up and lubed before use. The pivot requires a 6-point star head to loosen it. Came pretty sharp from the factory. Black anodized for reduced reflection, but the finish is not as rugged as some flashlights (Surefire, fenix). An inexpensive fast operating knife for a fraction of the price of other knives. The way the clip is positioned and the oval grooves on the handle that the clip recesses into gives it a death grip on your pants, which also kills the pant seem and fabric when you pull it out. Pulling the clip away from the body while unholstering it will fix that. The material is not the best, but for this price, it usually isn't a big deal. Repeated use will have you constantly sharpening. I love the flip finger opening. Once lubed and loosened, it should only require the use of one hand (an index finger) to open. The grip could be worked on. The flip stud does act as a hilt or guard, but the body itself does not have knurling (apart from the lock) or enough friction material.A similar design to the EVO is the Boker Plus Trance. It has a more secure grip and feels right and factory sharp right out of the box. Other than that, the EVO serves its purpose and I would buy again.Bottom line:Recommended. Good buy for cheap!
