This is an artisan hand-made item of exceptional quality. It comeswith a “hand-made” certificate and is packaged in a nice, gift-able box. It is sold as awhiskey cup and is meant to lend a smoky flavor to whisky type alcohols. They did thatby charring the inside of the cup - the same idea as storing liquor in charred barrels tolend fermenting alcohol a distinct deeper layer aroma. The inside, charred part of the cuphas had a good sanding and - what looks to me like a tung oil finish. That is, to seal thewood grain, so nothing will leak. Tung oil or any other sealants for food utensils are foodgrade and safe to consume from. If you have a developed olfactory sense, you canalready get a whiff of smoke from the char. I wanted to test, if the bourbon truly tastessmoky from this cup vs. just from a regular whiskey glass. For that purpose, I pouredequal portions into a glass and into this cup (please see pictures). I let them “breathe”for 1/2 hour and tried a few sips of each. As said before, I could smell the char in thecup, so both senses, taste and smell, went in tandem to produce a quite distinguishablesmoky layer to the bourbon in the cup that was not present in the glass portion.As to cleaning this little piece of art, they suggest, not to soak the cup for longer than aminute in water. Use warm water, but no chemical soap or abrasive sponge, rinse andwipe it out, then hand dry it. You don’t use soap because you do not want to mess withthe inner char. Well, can just water remove bacteria? Not so much - but- if you use thecup as intended - you will only have high percentage alcohols in this cup - which haveanti-bacterial properties of their own. A water rinse is really all that you need, to get thecup clean afterwards. Because wood swells excessively in water, a water soak is never agood idea. Does alcohol swell wood as well? Yes, but wood tends to be more water thanalcohol permeable. Add to this, that tung oil does not dissolve in alcohol, but lends theinner part of the cup a seal, you will find only minimal or no swelling of the wood thattouches the alcohol. However, it may be advisable to treat the cup to oil conditioning andcuring every now and again. This is a well made, unique item that will be sure to catchattention as a gift or conversation piece.

Makes for a nice drink in the evenings. I don’t think it really adds anything to the flavor of bourbon or whiskey but it doesn’t detract either. It is beautifully made and it comes with care instructions which are very simple and easy. Most of the time I will choose a glass but this is a nice change of pace.

I live in Jack Daniel country where whiskey is aged in charcoal barrels. This cup reminded me of that process and I wanted to see how a wooden cup would work for a favorite beverage.First of all the packaging for this item is very professional and like what is pictured in the round cardboard box is a keepsake itself for storage or use. Inside the box was a tissue wrapped oak cup very much like the one in the ad. The stain and woodgrain on the cup is very even and beautiful with the vertical striping on the cup. The inside is charred or blackish but there is no flaking or odor. It gives it a nice look, but don't expect it to give your drink a bit of smoky flavor.Since this is genuine wood, there are care instructions included. Wood and water/liquid do not normally make a good match so time will tell but to keep the cup looking good it should be hand-dried properly before storage in a cabinet.Overall - I am impressed with this cup. It is beautifully made and a nice gift for a hard-to-buy-for family member or friend that likes a nightcap occasionally.

Such a beautiful glass! This would make the most perfect gift! My husband loves having an Old Fashioned and he is obsessed with this glass now. The glass does not sweat or leak, it keeps your drink ice cold and the aroma of the glass enhances the experience of your drink. The size of the glass is perfect and the fact that this is homemade makes this as a gift that much more amazing. I love the packaging this comes in as well! Overall would highly recommend!

While this cup is stunning, the purpose is lacking. It’s is a beautiful wood cup, well made and finished. The inside does have a charred appearance but has been sanded and sealed, not imparting any smokiness. My husband tried a side by side of whiskey in this cup and in a glass of equal size and noticed no difference in the smokiness. We were thinking that maybe we needed to wear it in but even on the 10th try, no difference.This cup is beautiful, very light weight, and keeps drinks cool longer than glass. You do have to hand wash it and it does hold on to alcohol as you can smell it even after washing and drying- consider it like cast iron that has been “seasoned”. I live in a dry climate and so far the cup has held up well with no conditioning, but could probably use a bit of wood conditioner every 6 months or so depending on how often you use it and your climate.

I think this cup is super cool. I LOVE the look of the wood. It’s just fun to drink out of because it looks awesome! The packaging is nice too, which makes this a great gift to get someone. The cup is a lightweight but sturdy construction that can last a long time as long as you hand wash it. It does impart a smoky flavor to your beverages, but it’s subtle and not overwhelming. It’s meant for whiskey/bourbon but we’ve used it for other things too (like wine or even water). Overall, it’s a really nice product. It feels maybe a little pricey to me for one cup (I kind of wish it came in a 2-pack), but they offer good sales from time to time (even up to 40% off!), so watch for those if you’re budget-conscious.
