Tips for making bismuth crystal:
1. Don't use a saucepan. The sides heat and cool too quickly, "burning" the metal which forms an oxide which looks like grey sand.
2. Use a crucible and tongs.
3. You must also skim the slag off the top of the molten metal.
4. Eye glasses, shoes and gloves are needed.
